First-Contact Math: Discussed briefly in Act 1, but ultimately averted.Faster-Than-Light Travel: The Alkerbierre Drive."Hanfrod at KSC" tries to keep the irrepressible Jeb in line, without much success. Epistolary Novel: Act 1 takes this form.Casual Interplanetary Travel: Averted getting from Kerbin to the gas giant Jool took three months. It does however play the trope straight in the sense that it's a framing device for exposition and backstory. And yes, Jeb thinks it's an Incredibly Lame Pun too. Captain's Log: Parodied in-universe with the Captain's Blog. And boy oh boy, there's a lot of paperwork. Beleaguered Bureaucrat: When he's not acting as Mission Control, Gene's the one who gets stuck with the paperwork.Boldly Coming: Spoofed when Jeb talks about hoping to find a planet of pink-skinned space babes.Badass Bookworm: Jeb's pretty badass alright, and he owns 57GB of ebooks.Asteroid Miners: The crew of Starfarer 1 spend a little time doing this when they get low on fuel.Audience Participation/ Fourth-Wall Mail Slot: The blog comments and interview questions that provide a framing device for exposition are nearly all supplied by the readers.Aliens Steal Cable/ Learnt English from Watching Television: A rare, possibly unique Perspective Flip, as we get to see the process from the point of view of the aliens.Warning: Reading the first story is essential to know what is going on, and literally the first sentence spoils the crossover. The sequel, "Beyond the Next Frontier," can be found here. It borrows a lot of worldbuilding and setting details from First Flight (with the enthusiastic consent of its author), and while it can be understood without, reading it first is strongly recommended. note It used to be on the official Kerbal Space Program forums too, but the mods declared it Harmful to Minors. ![]() It's now complete and can be found here, here, here or here. The Next Frontier is a Kerbal Space Program fanfiction - crossed over with Firefly - by a guy who prefers to be known as "Jake Grey", or sometimes just " Jake" (author of Doing It Right This Time). Their scientists have probed the depths of the mysterious space-time distortion known as the Deep-Space Kraken and learned the secret of faster-than-light travel, and now the five brave Kerbals of the starship Starfarer 1 are setting out on their people's first mission to another star system.Īnd boy, are they going to be surprised when they get there! not too shabby for something that began with a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs building sounding rockets out of scrap metal.īut for the Kerbin Space Agency, there's no such thing as a final frontier. Permanent settlements on Duna, extensive asteroid mining operations, an orbital habitat in the works. This feature is a godsend for new players who aren't familiar with the game's basic controls or their ability to pause, speed up, or slow down the progression of time in a space mission. The Kerbal Space Program has come a long way in the thirty years since their first manned launch. Additionally, the spaceship assembly and spaceflight tutorial missions are now fully voice-acted and automatically pause whenever a new step in the lesson needs to be taught. First, each tutorial mission is paired with a short animated video where a narrator uses cartoon icons to teach players about the physics of real spaceflight (as opposed to spaceflight in games like the planet-hopping Star Wars Jedi: Survivor). The tutorials in the Kerbal Space Program 2 early access are much more approachable and comprehensive for several reasons. To truly master the gameplay of KSP 1, however, most players will need to experiment heavily or consult video tutorials. KSP 1 does come with a basic set of tutorial missions, centered around core gameplay mechanics such as building a staged rocket, launching a spaceship into orbit, or plotting out orbital maneuvers with the node system. Newcomers to the Kerbal Space Program multiplayer space race, however, may want to purchase the early access before Kerbal Space Program 1 for a single, simple reason: KSP 2 has a much better tutorial system. ![]() As mentioned before, the early access version of Kerbal Space Program 2 is far from complete in terms of gameplay features.
